Gmail Dots and Plus Aliases: One Inbox, Different Addresses

A different-looking Gmail address can still deliver to the same mailbox. Dots and plus tags are useful to understand before testing email delivery, but neither gives you a new Google account or a private temporary inbox.

What dots change in a personal Gmail address

For personal @gmail.com accounts, adding or removing dots in the username does not change the destination mailbox. Google documents that dotted versions belong to the same account owner. This rule does not necessarily apply to work, school or other custom-domain addresses.

For example, a dotted spelling of the username is an address variant, not a second login with a separate password. Do not send test messages to invented addresses that may belong to someone else.

What a plus tag does

A plus tag goes between the username and @gmail.com: [email protected]. Gmail can deliver tagged mail to the underlying account. In a mailbox you own, a tag can help identify a test or organize incoming messages with filters.

The tag is part of the recipient you enter, not a new account registration. A website may reject or normalize tagged addresses, so successful Gmail routing does not guarantee that its form will accept them.

Test an alias without changing the task

  1. Use a Gmail account you own, or copy the exact address generated by the temporary tool. Examples on this page are format illustrations.
  2. For your own mailbox, choose a harmless tag such as +test and send a message from an address you control.
  3. Check the recipient and arrival in the destination mailbox. If testing your own form, also check the address saved by that form.
  4. If the form rejects the address, follow its requirements. Do not assume changing punctuation creates a separate identity.
  5. For Tempgmail.io, keep the generated spelling and check the timer instead of manually editing the address.

Aliases and privacy are different questions

A plus tag reveals the underlying username, and dots do not conceal it. In your own account, access depends on your account security. In a public temporary service, other visitors may share the underlying inbox and see messages.

Use aliases you own for organization, and a temporary session for disposable receiving tests. Use a private mailbox for recovery, purchases or personal information. A unique-looking address is not a promise of exclusive access.

Can I send from the temporary alias?

The public Tempgmail.io tool receives messages; it does not provide an outgoing Gmail mailbox or Google login credentials. Receiving an email at an alias and configuring a sender identity are separate tasks.
