How to Create a Gmail Account You Fully Control

A temporary inbox is fine for a quick test, but an account you plan to keep needs an address that is yours. Creating a Gmail account takes a few minutes. Setting it up properly, with recovery options and strong security, is what keeps it yours for years.
Before you start
- Sign out of any Google account already open in the browser, or use a private window.
- Choose two or three username ideas in case your first choice is taken.
- Have a phone number or an existing email you control ready for recovery.
- Think of a long, unique password you have never used elsewhere, or let a password manager create one.
Create the account
- Go to the Google Account sign-in page and choose Create account.
- Select For my personal use, unless the account is for a child or a business.
- Enter your name and date of birth. Google uses your age to apply the right account settings.
- Choose a suggested Gmail address or create your own username.
- Set your password and follow the on-screen steps, which may include confirming a phone number.
- Review the privacy and terms screens, then finish.
If your username is not accepted
Google does not allow a username that is already in use, very similar to an existing one, previously used and deleted, or reserved. Adding a number, a middle initial or a word related to your interests usually works. Remember that dots do not create a different username in personal Gmail: j.smith and jsmith are the same address.
Set up recovery straight away
- Add a recovery phone number and a recovery email address you control.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification.
- Run Google’s Security Checkup and fix anything it highlights.
- Write down or securely store backup codes in case you lose your phone.
Never use a temporary address as the recovery email for a real Gmail account. When that address expires, the recovery route disappears with it.
Move accounts from a temporary inbox
If you tested a service with a temporary address and decided to keep it, change that service’s contact email to your new Gmail while you still have access, and confirm the change. Do this before the temporary session ends.
Can I have more than one Gmail account?
Yes. You can create separate accounts for different purposes and switch between them in Gmail. Each should have its own password and recovery details. Google may ask for extra verification when many accounts are created, and its terms apply to every one of them.
Open the tool and check the address and timer before sending a message.
